Day 12… February 26th.. 3lbs
Little man had a rough day today. His heart rate has been elevated in the 185-200 range. They did a blood sugar test which apparently came back low, so they ran a bunch of labs, pulled blood, urine, and tried to get spinal fluid to check for infection. He was poked 8 times, after 2 failed attempts on getting blood, then 2 successful attempts, starting an IV, and 3 failed attempts at getting a spinal tap. Poor kid.. he was so frazzled the rest of the evening. They decided to start antibiotics as a precautionary. So far what has come back shows to be in the normal range, we’re waiting for cultures to come back to see if anything is brewing. Hopefully we’re in the clear 🤞🏻. They’ve started Tylenol in hopes to get him for comfortable. I would be pissed too after being poked so many times.. hopefully we’ll have a clearer answer tomorrow of what’s going on with our little bugger, and hopefully get his heart rate down..
They did start Physical therapy today since his arms don’t fully extend, and both of his feet curl to the side. She ruled out clubbed feet though, which is exciting news (this was one of the risks that was thrown at us when I lost my water). So they’ll be working on strengthening his muscles to pull his feet straight about 4 days/week. First step though is just to get him comfortable with being touched. He gets pretty frantic and fidgety (understandably… He’s had a lot done to him since he’s been here!), then we’ll move forward with gentle massage, stretching and strengthening.
I missed the last shuttle to Ronald McDonald house, so I planned to sleep in the recliner in his little cubicle. His sweet nurse Laura was able to get me into a family room here in the NICU so I could get some rest without monitors going off and babies crying around me. I’m so grateful I could stay so close after such a chaotic evening, while catching up on a few 💤.
