Day 49: April 4th
Blood tests came back today. Glucose and electrolytes came back normal, his hematocrit was on the low end (anemic), which probably explains why he’s looked so pale. His nurse said preemies generally don’t produce red blood cells adequately until around 35 weeks of gestation (He’s 34 weeks 6 days). They do have him on an iron supplement which hopefully will help and he won’t need another blood transfusion. Blood gas came back “ok”, but not noticeably different than when they had dropped him down to CPAP of 5. They’d like it to be better before they switch to highflow. It sounds like they are going to wait it out over the weekend and see if he can make any progress by Monday. If not, they’ll likely give him another steroid boost. So… not as much progress as we had hoped for this week, but it’s always on their schedule. We want to make sure he’s ready. He has already jumped so many hurdles, we’re just grateful that he’s here and doing well!
He was also having some bradycardia and apnea events overnight, which was expected since it was day 5 of no longer being on caffeine. They said it hasn’t been concerning dips though.. so hopefully he can get himself stabilized on his own and won’t need his shot of espresso anymore.
Here’s a snapshot of earlier today… I was making breakfast for myself and Zylee. I can’t turn my back for one second on this kid.. Addi was so stationary when she was this little. Never really a climber, and always content to sit and play in one area. Z is always keeping us on our toes… I’m sure the volunteer at the front desk at RMDH was watching the security cameras in amusement as soon as I realized where she was… 🤦🏼♀️ those of you with 2 under 2 or multiples are super parents!!!
