Day 74: April 29th

I was able to squeeze in more holding today. Ryker is doing well, all of his weekly bloodwork came back nicely. Still on CPAP of 7, although hanging around the 30% range. They’ve also reduced his feeds again down to 45 minutes and he is. tolerating it well. If his glucose levels continue to come back in a good range & he isn’t throwing up, they’ll switch him to 30 minutes tomorrow!

They did request to do his 2 month immunizations. After a bit of research both on the web & the paperwork they gave me, we requested to hold off for a short bit until he is a bit more stable, especially considering he’s still in a sterile environment. I found multiple sources stating that preemies often have events of apnea and bradycardia for about 48 hours post vaccination. Considering we just experienced some extreme drops of A’s & B’s post-op, I didn’t think it was appropriate to test the waters.. Also, the DTAP paperwork the nurse handed me states “May not be appropriate for those who have had seizures or other nervous system problems”. Although they ruled out what they thought were seizures post-op, he was still having neuro irritations that were prone to seizures in the future. Once again it didn’t feel right to test the waters at this time.. The kid has had a rough week and a half, and we want to give him a chance to gain a bit more strength and stability before risking chances of other complications.. I appreciate that the nurses and doctors were understanding of our wishes.
