Day 97: May 22nd
Tori was his nurse again today. She said he seemed so much happier and in less pain since starting the Zantac. He’d still have his moments, but not nearly as severe. The medicine doesn’t go into full affect for a few days, but the fact that it’s showing signs of helping is reassuring. She did confirm thrush, so they’ve started treating for that as well.
She also mentioned he had his best yet consumption of bottle feeds, eating 54%, vs. being in the low 40’s the day before.
He’s still on 200cc’s oxygen, however after talking to the neonatologist on his case, they’ll start chipping away on his oxygen once he’s taking his full feeds. Hopefully the Zantac is the solution to his reflux, and he can start making good progress on his feeds once he’s not in pain.
I also received more answers on his dislocated hip and what the plan of action is there. Originally they tried the pavlic harness some weeks back, which after having him in it for 24 hours, they had said it wouldn’t work and he would need surgery. They had mentioned it would likely happen around his first birthday. Originally they made it seem like it was super important to try to fix the problem early, but waiting to treat it when he’s supposed to be working on crawling/walking didn’t seem right. Ortho FINALLY came over to answer our questions. They said they would do a consult once he is stable and discharged. Surgery wouldn’t have to wait until his first birthday, but priority at this moment is that he’s stable everywhere else. I asked about the procedure that would take place. She said there were two options; the first being is that they would put him under anesthesia and attempt to place his hip back into the socket without surgery. If this doesn’t work, they would need to make an incision and have to put it back in place surgically. Once the procedure is done, they would place him in a full body cast that would hold his legs into a spread eagle- froggy like position. He would be in the cast for several months..
Poor kid.. I’m hoping he can catch a break soon!
